Safety First
This weekend, fourty team members of all residential colleges got some hands on experience in rendering first aid. Krupp College organised a two day first aid course, held in the common room by the German welfare organisation Arbeiter Samariter Bund. While the theoretical components contained very useful rescue strategies, the fun part were the practical excercises.
On Saturday, the College Masters, College Office Managers, Resident Associates, Security Team Members, Floor Reps and College Office Team Members got sweating while trying to resuscitate mannequins; and they proved serious acting skills in simulations of emergency situations. The first aid educators even provided fake blood to make the situations more realistic and more fun.
On Sunday, the course continued with further excercises geared towards small cuts, hypothermia, heat stroke and substance abuse. The course finished with a practical exam. In pairs, the team members had to render assistance to other team members. The first aid trainers proved to be real make up artist by creating fake wounds so realistic that one test candidate screamed when she saw her "patient".
The campus now has 40 more people confident in taking the right measures to help others in need, and while they all hope they will never have to use their new skills, it is good to know that they are around.
