Ethiopian Millenium

A second Millennium???

That’s just the beauty of the world! Thousands of different cultures, traditions and rituals that manage to keep everyone astonished. Seven years ago, the whole world celebrated the new millennium full of hope and enthusiasm; and now in 2007, Ethiopians finally got their chance to celebrate the turn of their very own unique millennium.
Ethiopia is a country with unique cultural diversity, different historical records and features. One of these features is reflected in its ancient calendar which lags behind by 7 years from the Gregorian calendar. This discrepancy results from differences between the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church as to the date of the creation of the world.

The Ethiopian community at Jacobs University, together with the Krupp college office worked hard to bring the best Millennium Celebration in the university. It was held on Saturday September 22, 2007 in Krupp servery. The evening show was heated off with the live performance of professional Ethiopian dancers from Berlin. A glimpse of an actual New Year celebration (Enkutatash as they call it in Ethiopia) was shown to the students by the Ethiopian community. The famous coffee ceremony was demonstrated and the traditional Ethiopian dressing styles were shown. The program was concluded with an after party at the students Bar with a guest DJ from Hamburg.
